1% solution of acetic acid is a clear, colorless liquid that emits a potent sour smell. As the second simplest carboxylic acid, following formic acid, acetic acid comprises two small functional groups: an acetyl group and a hydroxyl group. It is also referred to as ethanoic acid, with the chemical formula CH₃COOH. This dilute acetic acid solution is primarily utilized in histological applications.

Application :
- The 1% acetic acid solution is used to rinse tissue sections after staining to remove excess dye and avoid possible color transfer between adjacent sections.
- Acetic acid 1% solution is used to gently transfer tissue sections to the acidic environment of the staining solution.
- In histology, it is used to differentiate stains by removing excess dyes that have non-specifically bound to the tissue. This allows clearer visualization of the specifically stained structures.
