Acid blue 9 (CAS No. 3844-45-9): is a reddish-violet to dark blue powder or granular dye that exhibits a metallic luster. It dissolves well in water, being soluble in water at about 50 g/L at 90'C, and also in ethanol. It is orange, which turns pale yellow when diluted with strong sulfuric acid. Its aqueous solution gives a greenish-blue color; when sodium hydroxide is added to the solution, it turns to a colorless state and gives a deep purple precipitate. The dye has a molecular formula of C37H34N2Na2O9S3 and is of the triarylmethane group of dyes. The acid blue 9 is also commonly known as Brilliant Blue FCF, FD&C blue No. 1, C.I. 42090 and is referred to as E133 by the E-number.
