Alcian Yellow C.I. 12840 is a Red to brown or Rust-colored powder. Its chemical formula is C₄₀H₄₆Cl₂N₈S₄. It is also known as Ingrain yellow 1. It is soluble in water but insoluble In Alcohol. It is used in Histology, cytology and other study of the microscopic anatomy for tissues and cells.

Application :

  • Alcian Yellow C.I. 12840 is used for distinguishing types of glycosaminoglycans and for the detection of neuro-secretory material.
  • This dye is used with Alcian Blue dye for differentiating between different types of glycosaminoglycans. 
  • It is also used with Toluidine Blue O dye as a counterstain for the rapid detection of Helicobacter pylori bacteria, but it can also be used for detecting Giardia and Cryptosporidium genera.
