Fluorescein diacetate (FDA) is a derivative of the fluorescent dye fluorescein. Its chemical formula is C24H16O7. This colorless, non-fluorescent compound can penetrate cell membranes and is also known as 3,6-Diacetoxyfluoran or Di-O-acetylfluorescein. It is used in cell biology and microbiology for selectively labeling and quantifying viable cells.

Fluorescein diacetate stains living cells green, and is a substrate for esterases. Fluorescein Diacetate is suitable for use in cell viability assays. Removal of the acetate groups by cellular esterases results in fluorescence in cells with intact membranes.
