Gentian violet is a cationic triphenylmethane dye, usually identified as hexamethylpararosaniline chloride. Its chemical formula is C25H30ClN3. The 1% aqueous solution of gentian violet typically appears as a deep blue or violet-colored liquid. Gentian violet is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves readily in alcohol or acetone. Gentian violet, also known as crystal violet or methyl violet 10B, is a synthetic dye derived from coal tar. When dissolved in water, it forms a 1% aqueous solution. Gentian violet 1% aqueous solution is a versatile staining agent used in histological, and microbiological applications.
