Phenolphthalein White CAS: 77-09-8 | MF: C20H14O4 | MW: 318.32, Buy now for reliable and Reproducible results from Tristains indicators.

Phenolphthalein Indicator White (CAS No. 77-09-8) is a white crystalline organic compound, which is a member of the phthalein family. It is well known to be used as an acid-base pH indicator. In acidic conditions, phenolphthalein is colorless and changes to pink and then deep red in alkaline and cyanide carbonate solutions, respectively. It is colorless at a pH less than 8.5 and turns pink to deep red at a pH greater than 9.0. The molecular formula of this compound is C20H14O4, and it does not dissolve easily in water but does dissolve easily in organic solvents. Because of these characteristics, Phenolphthalein Indicator White is widely utilized in analytical chemistry, educational and industrial laboratories.

Applications

  • Acid–Base Titrations: Typically, it is employed in determining titration endpoints in analytical chemistry processes with a high level of accuracy.
  • Educational Demonstrations: It suits academic laboratory teaching well because it possesses a distinctly observable color change with the experimental changes in pH and titration.
  • Institutes of Quality Control: Used in industrial and pharmaceutical quality control testing where sensitivity and reliability is needed.
  • Research Chemistry: Applied to analytical investigations on alkaline reactions and compound reaction analysis.

Key features

  • Highly Visible Transitions: Gives definite and distinct color transitions with a change in pH.
  • User-Friendly pH Detection: Properly detects changes in pH between 8.5 and 10.
  • Versatile Usage: Applicable to non-aqueous and aqueous chemical systems.
  • Stable and Low Maintenance: Stable at normal laboratory temperatures.
  • Cost-Effective Performance: Provides professional-grade accuracy at a cost effective laboratory use.

General Description

Phenolphthalein Indicator White (CAS No. 77-09-8) is an organic indicator (commonly used) in reliable acid-base pH testing. Being a crystalline white powder made of the phthalein group of dyes, it has been known to perform reliably in laboratory tests used in the analysis and education of chemistry students. This indicator has a molecular weight of 318.32 g/mol and thus is given a dependable sensitivity in a variety of chemical uses. Phenolphthalein Indicator White is highly soluble in alcohol and other organic solvents at a neutral pH and therefore is compatible with a wide variety of reaction conditions where solvent permeability is necessary.

Phenolphthalein is a chemical that is commonly used as a colorimetric pH indicator. The compound has been observed to turn orange at pH <0, clear between pH 0-8.2, fuchsia between pH 8.2-12, and clear again at a pH above 12. It has been postulated that the mutagenic effects of Phenolphthalein at high doses can be attributed the enhancement intracellular free oxygen radicals. The compound has also been observed to induce mitotic abnormalities and micronuclei with kinetochores in vitro. In Syrian hamster embryos treated with 10-40 μM of Phenolpthalein a significant number of chromosomal aberrations occurred at the hprt locus. On human breast cancer cells Phenolphthalein has been observed to have weak estrogenic effects.
