Bromothymol blue is a synthetic dye with the chemical formula C27H28Br2O5S. It belongs to the class of sulfonephthalein dyes. In its solid form, it appears as dark green crystals. Bromothymol Blue is a sulfonated hydroxyquinone in acidic solutions. In alkaline solutions, it is present as a dianion that is blue with a larger conjugated system than the yellow hydroxyquinone. Both forms are lipophilic. It is also known as bromthymol blue or dibromothymolsulfonphthalein. When dissolved in water, it gives a blue solution. Similar to other pH indicators, it changes color depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the solution it’s in. In acidic conditions, it turns yellow (pH 6), while in alkaline conditions, it turns blue(7.6). Bromothymol blue 0.04% solution is commonly used as a pH indicator in various laboratory and biological applications.
