Eosin Y is a fluorescein-based dye derived from fluorescein disodium salt and tetrabromofluorescein. It typically appears as a reddish-orange powder. Its chemical formula is C20H8Br4O5. Eosin Y is soluble in water and ethanol. Eosin Y 1% is prepared when 1 gram of Eosin Y is dissolved in a sufficient quantity of solvent (usually water) to make 100 milliliters of solution. Eosin Y 1% solution is used primarily as a biological stain and pH indicator. Eosin Y gives color change from yellow at low pH to red at higher pH.
