Methyl Blue presents as a solid with a dark blue to purple hue. It is classified as a triaminotriphenylmethane dye and is also referred to as Acid blue 93, Aniline blue water soluble, Cotton blue, Poirriers blue, and Water blue. This synthetic dye has the chemical formula C37H27N3Na2O9S3 and is a heterocyclic aromatic compound containing a phenothiazine core with a dimethylamino group and a chloride counterion. Methyl Blue is soluble in water, alcohol, and other polar solvents, and exhibits a distinct deep blue color when dissolved.

Methyl Blue is a histology dye commonly used to stain collagen blue in tissue sections. The compound has been determined useful as a vital dye for interocular observations. Methyl Blue has been incorporated in Sabouraud agar for the identification of Candida albicans strains. The compound has also been incorporated in other histology staining procedures such as Mallory’s connective tissue stain.
